*New: Penny's Community Yoga Classes at The Goddard School at Fleming Island

Penny, who was drawn to yoga quite naturally, has received the level 1 and 2 certificates from the Radiant Child Yoga Program and has taken the 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training with Two Suns Rising Yoga School under the instruction of Didier and Ann Razon. Penny teaches yoga to children and adults (including seniors).

While yoga may mean something different to each person who experiences it, Penny says: "Yoga is like prayer in motion for me. I feel so aligned with God when moving and stretching my body in different directions. It often feels like a health dance, a puzzle piece of life that helps keep my body flexible, my mind clear and creative, and my spirit joyfully connected to God. Now, that's the type of health I enjoy bottling," she exclaims.

After Penny's 8-year-old nephew took a yoga class with her, he said, "I feel so much lighter." Penny says that is proof that even young children carry stress, especially in today's society, and need to work it out of their little bodies. For some, that might mean a fun and relaxing yoga class.

Penny has worked with the Orange Park Gators to encourage deeper stretching blended with deeper breathing, and she promoted healthy eating to the youth athletes by serving banana/strawberry smoothies after class.

If you live in or nearby the Orange Park area in Florida, Penny is available to teach private and/or public group classes. She also has a passion for facilitating child/parent partner classes, too. "It's a great way to promote family bonding and family health," she says.

The pose relevant to ADD was an excellent idea, Penny. I didn’t notice as much from the pictures, but Caleb looks like you! Such a handsome young man :-) Thank you Penny! Well done!! More from Tom: A New Perspective about Yoga

"From the outside looking in, my impression of Yoga was something that would fit the need of a latte sipping, soy bean-munching yuppie Hollywood type that would do this to fill time of an empty life. In other words, Yoga did not show up on my path for life.

I came from a blue-collar town where real men did not cry or indulge in inter reflection; this need was met by hunting or fishing. Exercise was manly-man sports like football, baseball, wrestling which dovetailed into strength-training endeavors like weight-lifting and running. I did all these sports and enjoyed them, as well as downhill skiing, cross-country skiing and mountain biking. My health, well-being and happiness where enhanced by these activities.

Now that I have turned another age milestone in life, I had to narrow some of my choices of activities. I thought, What could I do now to meet the strength training and endorphin I crave? Exploring another exercise or sport that would fill the high of a good run or bounding over a mountain peak with a dusting of a fresh snow.

Well, I found it in an unlikely source -- “Yoga”! How could this be? Not for me, I thought, but I broke down after constant nudging of my boss. I thought, What the heck! I will try this once, get it over with and be done. End of story.

My first class, I was met at the door by the Yoga teacher who introduced herself as Penny, an attractive lady with a powerhouse of positive energy. She taught us to breath with our Yoga moves, which I thought I had already worked to a science with the mechanics of breathing that it takes to run long distance, but this was different “deep cleansing breaths” that felt as if we were removing toxins from the body with each exhale. She patiently walked us through each pose, checking each one of us for the correct posture and to gently remind us to breath correctly.

The end of the first class, I looked across at my supervisor, and his face had no tension; the worry lines that creased his forehead early that day were gone. I felt great; the stress I was carrying with me that day left me completely. I felt as if I could float through the rest of the day in a force field of positive energy to face any challenge. By the fifth class, in the relaxation portion of the class, I was able to leave the room in my mind with the mental view of a sailboat in the sunset I saw the night before bounding effortlessly across the river. What a treat; I did not think this depth of relaxation could actually be done.

I think Penny is great teacher who loves what she does. Like some of the best coaches I have had in sports, she knows how to motivate us; she tailors the class to meet the beginners as well as the advanced in Yoga moves, leaving both satisfied. In the few classes I have gone to, I can tell the difference in my balance and flexibility I have not seen in 30 years. I now have an exercise in both mind and body that I intend on doing for the rest of my life.

My narrow mind view of Yoga and the people who participated has changed. I’m now on the inside looking out wishing I would have started earlier, but not to dwell on what I missed, I’m motivated to make up for lost time."
